WHMIS 2018 — Complete Canadian Certification Course

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

This comprehensive online training course provides workers and employers across Canada with everything they need to understand and comply with WHMIS 2018 — Canada’s national standard for hazardous product safety in the workplace.

Developed in alignment with the Hazardous Products Act (HPA), the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR), and all 13 provincial and territorial Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Acts, this course meets the training requirements for federally and provincially regulated workplaces from British Columbia to Newfoundland.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, participants will be able to identify all 10 official WHMIS 2018 GHS pictograms and explain the hazard each one represents, understand the difference between supplier labels and workplace labels and know what information each must contain, navigate all 16 sections of a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and locate critical information quickly during an emergency, classify substances under WHMIS physical, health, and environmental hazard categories, apply the hierarchy of hazard controls and select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), respond correctly to chemical spills, exposures, and workplace emergencies, and understand worker rights and employer obligations under Canadian OHS law across all jurisdictions.

Course Details

Upon completing all 12 modules, participants must pass a 20-question final assessment with a minimum score of 80% (16 out of 20 correct). Questions cover all course modules including pictogram identification, SDS navigation, Canadian legal framework, hazard classification, PPE selection, and emergency response procedures. Participants who do not pass on the first attempt may review the course material and retake the assessment at no additional cost. Results are displayed immediately upon submission.

Certificate of Completion

Participants who successfully pass the final assessment receive a Golden Safety Certificate of Completion — generated automatically and available to print or save as a PDF. The certificate includes the participant’s full name, company, completion date, assessment score, and a unique certificate ID. It is valid for 3 years from the date of issue, in accordance with best practices under the Alberta OHS Act (2021) and aligned with the refresher training recommendations of provincial OHS authorities across Canada.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is designed for all Canadian workers who work with, handle, store, or may be exposed to hazardous products in the workplace — including construction workers, oil and gas workers, miners, manufacturing employees, laboratory technicians, healthcare workers, and office staff. It is also ideal for supervisors, OHS coordinators, and safety officers responsible for maintaining WHMIS programs.

This course satisfies the generic WHMIS education requirement under Canadian OHS legislation. Employers must also provide workplace-specific WHMIS training covering the particular hazardous products present in their workplace, in addition to this generic training.
