“Motor vehicle incidents are the #1 killer in Alberta’s oil and gas sector. Every single one is preventable.”

The drive to and from a remote well site is statistically the most dangerous part of a day in the oilfield — more dangerous than the work itself. Gravel roads, wildlife, fatigue, extreme weather, H2S exposure zones, and heavy industrial traffic combine to create a driving environment unlike any other. This course gives oilfield drivers the full skill set to manage every hazard on Alberta’s resource roads.

What You Will Learn

  • Develop and execute a complete Journey Management Plan including check-in schedules and overdue protocols
  • Perform a thorough pre-trip vehicle inspection and properly stock an emergency kit for remote operations
  • Apply the Smith System (5 keys to defensive driving) on gravel, highways, and lease roads
  • Manage winter driving in Alberta’s extreme cold: black ice recognition, winter tire requirements, vehicle recovery
  • Recognize and respond to fatigue — including the sobering reality that 20 hours awake equals 0.08% BAC impairment
  • Know H2S hazards for drivers: detection, safe concentrations, and the critical rule about attempted rescue
  • Understand load securement, trailer sway response, and wildlife collision protocols
  • Follow the correct post-collision procedure under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act

Who This Course Is For:  Essential for all oilfield workers who drive as part of their job — from field technicians to equipment operators to managers making site visits.

Why It Matters:  The most common cause of fatality in Alberta’s oilfield is not a well blowout or an equipment failure — it’s a vehicle going off the road on a gravel resource road. This course addresses the real risk.
