“Substance use in the workplace costs lives, licences, and careers. Know your obligations.”
Substance use is one of the most misunderstood workplace safety topics in Canada — especially since cannabis legalization created new grey zones for employers and workers alike. This course cuts through the confusion with clear, evidence-based content on how alcohol and drugs impair performance, what your legal obligations are, and how to respond when substance use affects your workplace.
What You Will Learn
- Understand how alcohol and cannabis affect BAC, cognitive function, and safety-sensitive task performance
- Know the difference between legal use outside work hours and impairment at work — a distinction the Cannabis Act created
- Navigate the employer’s dual obligations: duty to maintain a safe workplace AND duty to accommodate substance use disorders
- Recognize observable signs of impairment (visual, behavioural, performance) without making a medical diagnosis
- Respond appropriately to suspected impairment: document objectively, report correctly, never diagnose
- Understand Canadian human rights law on substance use disorders as protected disabilities
- Apply post-incident testing rules, the limitations of drug testing in Canada, and Irving Pulp & Paper (2013 SCC)
